Spring Cleaning for Your Fences

When using a power washer, it’s a good idea to wear protective eye wear and stand a safe distance away.

Spring is finally here! You may have been outside enjoying the beautiful weather when you noticed that your fences have accumulated some debris over the winter. Hopefully you took our advice for prepping your fence for the winter. Whether you made special preparations or not, it’s a good idea to give your fence a good cleaning after the winter!

Wood Fence Cleaning

Wood fences are the most difficult type of fence to clean, since they’re made of a natural, porous material. There are two ways to efficiently clean a wood fence. The first way is to rent or buy a pressure washer. Using a pressure washer can be a lot of fun, especially when you see the stark difference it makes in grimey areas. However, if you do choose to use a pressure washer, make sure to stand at a safe distance; the power from the pressure washer is liable to splinter especially old wooden fences. Alternatively, you can take a bucket of soapy water and a gentle sponge or scrub brush and hand-wash your fence the old-fashioned way. After your fence is clean and dry, you can add a fresh layer of stain or paint to really make it shine!

Vinyl Fence Cleaning

Vinyl fences, unlike wood fences, are super easy to clean! All you need is that same bucket of soapy water and a sponge or bristle brush. Since vinyl is so smooth and non-porous, less dirt and debris tends to stick to it. If you really do have some tough stains in your vinyl fence, you can purchase a vinyl-cleaning spray at any home improvement store.

Wrought Iron Fence Cleaning

Wrought iron fences are the easiest fence to clean. All you need to do is spray it down with a hose while gently rubbing it with a sponge or bristle brush! This is actually a fun summer activity to do with kids; let everyone change into bathing suits, then get wet and have fun while doing a family project together! However, keep in mind that if your wrought iron fence is rusting or damaged, a simple wash won’t be a lasting solution. Depending on the extent of the damage, you may need to repaint or even replace your wrought iron fence.
