How to Paint or Stain Your Wood Fence

How to Paint or Stain Your Wood Fence

Liven your wood fence with some paint or stain this summer!

Many people love wood fences because of their versatility, rustic style, and traditional charm. If you want to put your own look on your wood fence, there are many options for painting or staining your fence. Use these methods to successfully enhance the look of your wood fence.

Gather Your Materials

Before you get started on your project, make sure that you have everything you need. Create a checklist for your materials and mark them all off before you dip your brush in the paint or stain. Choose a high-quality paint and primer that are designed for use in outdoor applications. Check the labels to make sure that they have UV inhibitors and are able to withstand constant exposure to the elements. When it comes to your brushes, invest in options that will allow you to get the most out of every stroke. Cheaper options often lose bristles in the paint or stain and cause imperfections on your fence.

Paint it First

If your fence hasn’t been installed yet, then now is the perfect time to apply your paint or stain. It makes for the easiest job of applying your choice to the surface. This approach allows you to paint the boards, stringers, and posts on all sides before they go into the ground.

Fence Prep

For fences that are already installed, take the time to prep it by cleaning the surface of any cobwebs, dirt, and all other surface grime. Use a whisk broom and cloth for the most effective process. Use a scraper or wire brush to remove the existing paint or stain before applying a new layer. This is also a great time to inspect the fence for any damage that may need repair before you paint the fence. If you find damage, have those boards repaired or replaced and sand the fence to remove burs and splinters.

Apply in Sections

When you prime and paint the fence, do it in sections. Unlike the way you would approach a wall, work on about five boards at a time. This helps minimize dried lines or mounds appearing on the surface. Work on one side of those five boards and walk around to the other side to complete that section before moving on.
