Getting Your Wood Fence Ready for Winter Weather

Make sure your wood fence is ready to weather through the winter.

The Mid-Atlantic region is notorious for the wide range of possibilities that the winter can take. During some years, temperatures can remain somewhat mild and bearable with not very many snowstorms. And, in other years, temperatures are frigid and snowstorms are a constant problem. No matter what kind of winter we have in store this year, it’s a good idea to make sure your wood fence is ready for whatever Mother Nature has in store for us. Here are three tips you should follow to get your wood fence in top shape for the winter.

1. Staining or Sealing Your Wood Fence

Wood fencing is most susceptible to damage during the winter because of the excess moisture due to snowfall. So you need to apply a proper waterproof stain or sealant on your fence to protect it from this moisture. Do it before the first freeze to potentially extend your fence’s lifespan by a few years. Look for a good brand that can guarantee protection against rot, mildew, mold, and decay.

2. Clean Debris from your Fence

Any debris leaning near your fence has the potential to retain moisture, which could spell bad news for your wood fence. Walk along your fence line and remove all debris – this includes wet leaves, tall grasses, twigs, weeds, and anything else. This will ensure that water is kept away from your fence and that weakening or decay is not promoted.

3. Test the Stability of your Fence Posts

Check all of your fence posts and test them for stability. If moisture has penetrated any of them, causing the concrete foundation to crack, get it repaired before winter sets in. One weakened post is all that it takes for the entire fence to be ruined by a heavy snowfall.
