Finding the Right Stain
There are a lot of different stains to choose from, and in the end it will come down to personal preference. You can get an idea of the different kinds of stains that are out there by visiting a hardware store and asking for assistance. When you find a stain you like, ask for a sample that you can test on a piece of scrap wood. The stain may look different on the wood than it does in the store.
Preparation
To calculate the amount of stain you’ll need, multiple the length of the fence by its height. Then multiply this number by two because there are two sides to the fence. Finally, divide this number by 250 to get the number of gallons you’ll need.
In terms of equipment, you’ll need a stain brush, a paint roller, and a brown bag to put at the base of the fence as you move along so the roller doesn’t pick up dirt from the ground. You’ll also want to wear protective gloves, glasses, and long-sleeve clothing to protect your skin.
Before you stain the wood, you’ll also need to clean it. Pressure washing is the best way to remove any dirt and grime that has accumulated on the fence.
Staining
The ideal conditions for staining are a day with temperature above 52 degrees F, and 48 hours before and after the staining that are rain free, so pick a dry time of year.
Mix the stain according to the directions on the container and use a small container to store the mix as you apply it. This helps keep it properly mixed and prevents it from getting contaminated.
Start with the outside of the fence and work from the top down, first using the roller and then the brush. This keeps any runs to the inside, which you can take care of once you’re finished the outside. On the inside, only use the brush so you have more control and to prevent running.
You’ll also want to position the paper bag under each picket so as you get towards the bottom of the fence you won’t pick up dirt with the roller or brush, which could contaminate the stain. You might also consider working with another person to get the job done twice as fast. Continue until you’ve finished the whole fence!
